Born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, Devta now lives and creates in Deer Isle, Maine where he opened his namesake studio shop in 2017. The raw and vibrant landscapes of both New Zealand and coastal Maine have had a profound influence on Devta’s work and vision.
In his youth he developed an early appreciation for jewelry and once in college began taking jewelry making classes and designing pieces with stones he had collected over the years. Enthralled by the creative process, he set up a jeweler's workbench at the foot of his bed. In his own words: "My first pieces were funky and crude, but I could not have been happier. I could see myself doing this for the rest of my life, and here I am. I want my work to be direct. It's all about color. I like to work with 22 karat gold which is as rich and lush as the color of the stones. I want there to be minimal intervention on my part. The work is about the color provided by the gold and stones working in powerful harmony. I am also influenced by ancient and ethnographic jewelry and I want to bring that feeling into a modern context. I deeply appreciate the historical and cultural significance of adorning and expressing oneself with jewelry as a means to tell a story and express ones identity.”
I am thrilled to be hosting a trunk show for my dear friend and gifted jewelry artist, Devta Doolan.
